The Unknown Commandant
The Life and Times of Denis Barry 1883–1923
Denis Barry.

Foreword by Cathal MacSwiney Brugha

In size and tone, Denis Barry’s funeral cortege in the midst of a bloody civil war was similar to those that marked the burials of Tomás MacCurtain and Terence McSwiney and, in more peaceful times, of Christy Ring and Jack Lynch. But who was ‘the Unknown Commandant’? A martyr and a hero to his countrymen, Denis Barry is overlooked today. This book seeks to rescue this hugely respected Cork man from relative anonymity. Denis Barry toiled in the shadows of McSwiney and MacCurtain in the tumultuous period of the Irish War of Independence. A brave soldier, patriot and sportsman, hunger strike ended his life at the Curragh Military Prison in 1923 for the cause he believed in.

Traditional Boats of Ireland
History, Folklore and Construction
Críostóir MacCárthaigh, compiler.

Shortlisted for the Best Irish-Published Book of the Year in the Irish Book Awards 2009

Two centuries ago sail and oar dominated local Irish trade and fisheries. At least 60 traditional boats operated. This remarkable work, many years in the making, describes these craft, their construction and handling, usage and history, with recollections by men who experienced the often arduous life associated with them. Many craft have survived in the life of coastal and island communities. A revival in traditional boats for leisure and sport now allows them to prosper as many are restored and replicas built. Arranged by coastal area, the contributors include local historians, boat-builders, sailors, former fishermen, and ‘classic boat’ enthusiasts. Gloriously illustrated with evocative photographs, exquisite boat plans and maps, this wonderful work is the finest and most complete description of Ireland’s traditional boats.
