Patricia Fitzgerald is a busy woman. A mother and a senior librarian at South Dublin Libraries, she’s responsible for managing events and festivals such as TEDxTallaght, Red Line Book Festival, Culture Night and many more. She’s also a prolific mandala artist, is qualified in the Therapeutic Use of Mindfulness and regularly runs workshops and retreats in Ireland and abroad. How does she do it? By practising mindfulness daily and by creating and colouring mandalas. When Patricia stumbled upon mandalas during her divorce, she didn’t know what they were. But she knew colouring them made her feel extraordinarily calm.
Patricia said, ‘Mandalas are a very ancient art form and can be found right across the world. The name itself comes from the ancient Sanskrit word for “circle”, or “container of spirit”. Can colouring a mandala really help you deal with stress and change? Yes! The act of creating and engaging with an intuitive piece of art brings you into a place of calmness, where negativity can be released and where decisions can be made in a much more focused manner.’
For this adult-colouring book, Patricia has created forty intricate, hand-drawn mandalas for you to colour as well as ten coloured mandalas with guided meditations. She accompanies these with inspirational quotations from people such as Henry Ford, Maya Angelou and Confucius as well as journal pages for you to document whatever journey you are on – be it physical, emotional or spiritual. Her message is to be kind to yourself, to relax and be free with your creativity and allow yourself to simply be. And most of all, have fun along the way!
The colouring of mandalas might seem like a small thing to do. But small changes lead to big shifts.
